"The finch family didn't sit still, but kept jumping around eating the over-ripe red elderberries as fast as they could. The red male was especially jumpy, grabbing the elderberries as fast as it could.
And it finally occured to me that he was, amazingly, drunk! Elderberry wine has been made by humans forever, and if berries were left to sit on the plants in the summer sun, I'm sure the same fermention process would begin to happen. The birds were just plain giddy. It was dinner and a drink, all rolled into one."
