"Yes, loon fledglings do ride on the adults backs, and I've heard they even dive with the parents. And YOU think you had a tramatic childhood!
There's a favorite Indian legend of mine, that tells the story of an Indian maid that jumped into the water when she heard she wasn't to marry the love of her life. Just as she jumped, he was coming up behind to present her with a beautiful necklace, but was too late. In desparation, he threw the necklace and it broke as it landed around her neck, splattering beads down onto her beautiful back. She became the loon, forever calling her sweetheart to come.
Notice the necklace? "
