Dropping Into Space
I had passed the tree many times, the tree with the hole. It sits above the creek on our neighborhood trail that meanders down the estuary of Chimacum Creek. Salmon come here, great-blue herons, kingfishers. Today, I saw the bufflehead taking off from that hole and just launch herself into space, that little heavy body just dropping through the air until outstretched wings created enough lift to glide to the water below.
