"Anna's Hummingbirds spend winters at home on the coastal strip of Northern California, weathering freezes and an occasional snow. Recently, they've been extending their winter range and the winter of 2008-9 was one spend the winter in our backyard here in Port Townsend. I spotted it after a week of record-breaking 15 degree weather. We put the feeder out as soon as we saw it, helping this tiny bird along for the rest of the winter.
Hummingbirds are marvels of natural engineering. The shoulder joint is extremely mobile, allowing the wing to move in a figure-eight rotation. This means the wing can have lift during both directions of the stroke. The wing beats normally at more than 20 times per SECOND, and as many as 80 per second. Hummers have high metabolic rates and must eat almost constantly. But, because they cannot pass the night without eating, they lower their body temperature up to 50 degrees from the normal 104 F. In spring, Anna's Hummingbirds build cup nests made of plant down bound together with spider's silk and lined with small feathers".
