Adventuress was in town for the Wooden Boat Festival.
As I drifted by in Sea Witch, our 1939 sloop, this scene lined up perfectly. Warm afternoon glow, sun on the boom crutch and baggywrinkles. It was a perfect combination. I didn't paint in on the spot, needless to say, but snapped a poor photo of it to creat this image later in my studio.
When I finished, I felt it needed just one thing more thing to create some action, so I added the glacous-winged gull swimming by.
This painting appeared on the Septemeber 2010 cover of 48 North magazine. One fan wrote in to say there was something wrong with the painting. The boom wasn't in the crutch, and there wasn't a topping lift to hold it up. No, it wasn't - and, not, there isn't. If you know the boat, you'll know the answer.
